Segment Synopsis: Ruth Lingen (RL) grew up in rural South Dakota. She went to the University of South Dakota, where she switched majors from painting to printmaking. Her mentor was John Risseeuw. She took a summer course in papermaking in Minnesota, and she made a book with it as an undergrad. She also learned printmaking from Lloyd Menard, who was a visiting artist at USD.

Segment Synopsis: Risseeuw encouraged RL to go to UW-Madison to study bookmaking with Walter Hamady, but first she spent a year as a commercial silkscreen printer in Omaha, Nebraska. She worked as an assistant in the type shop to Hamady, who was also her adviser. She learned a lot about typography from Hamady, who encouraged using tissue paper to get the letter spacing just right.

Segment Synopsis: At the UW, RL took lithography with Jack Damer; relief printing with Ray Gleckler; offset printing with Bill Weege; silkscreen printing with Dean Meeker; graphic design with Phil Hamilton; and graphics, papermaking and one-of-a-kind books with Hamady. She also studied art history and made trips to the Art Institute of Chicago.

RL and Kathy Kuehn collaborated with Thomas Pinkert on The Fox and the Farmer. RL worked with Walter Tisdale on the Walam Olum, a Native-American tale.

Segment Synopsis: When Hamady was on sabbatical, Joe Wilfer taught Hamady's classes, and RL became Wilfer's assistant. Wilfer had been working with Chuck Close in New York, and Wilfer took students on a number of field trips related to papermaking and printmaking. RL was impressed with the number of creative people in Madison.

In collaborating, you get a better product in the end. She also enjoyed printing The P-Culiar Dog or The Piddling Pup, with illustrations by Alexander Calder, for the Calder Foundation.
